Access to health services

The Methodist Church operates a hospital in Kabongo (Haut-Lomami province) and Kapanga (Lualaba province) with 90 and 150 beds respectively. These hospitals also work together with more than 50 local health centers in the surrounding village communities.

"The referral hospitals in the rural, poverty-stricken and remote locations of Kabongo and Kapanga provide the second highest level of medical care according to the DRC health system. Connexio develop's financial support for the hospitals in Kabongo and Kapanga makes it possible to procure essential medicines, retain qualified doctors in these locations and ensure access to high-quality medical care for people who would otherwise not be able to afford it."

Country Coordinator Blanchard Ayinza Boke

As the state is not sufficiently able to run and maintain social facilities, many schools and hospitals are run by local churches.

Every year, around 26,000 people are treated in both hospitals (outpatients and inpatients). A high proportion of patients are suffering from malaria, typhoid, tuberculosis and worm infestation. Many adults are also treated for stomach ulcers. Both hospitals perform minor and major life-sustaining operations. And over 2,000 women give birth in the two hospitals.

Prevention campaigns are used to advise 30,000 people on HIV, malaria, pregnancy and family planning.

The project is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, through a program contribution.
