Support for disadvantaged children and young people

The "Lechería de la Solidaridad" is a leisure center where disadvantaged children and young people are offered a safe and secure environment.

Unemployment is high in the San Pablo district, and violence and addiction problems in the family are part of everyday life for many children and young people. The "Lechería de la Solidaridad" was set up in 1983 by various churches and social organizations to address the worst needs of the people in San Pablo.

The children and young people receive a hot meal every day and are supported with their schoolwork. This gives them a better chance of finishing school and hopefully helps them escape the spiral of poverty. They also take part in workshops on a wide variety of topics (baking, chess, sport, dance, art, etc.). They learn a lot about social interaction, but also how they can occupy themselves in a meaningful way.

Swiss television has produced a short Documentary film about the Lechería in Buenos Aires.

This project is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, through a program contribution.

Aim of the project

The Lechería aims to give children and young people a better chance of finishing school and to help them escape the spiral of poverty.

Another aim is to support the children's parents. They are often overwhelmed with parenting. In the "Lechería" they should find a sympathetic ear, advice, the opportunity for further education or, in cases of hardship, material help. That is why a psychologist and a social worker also work at the Lechería.
