In Cambodia, people are experiencing first-hand the impact that the climate has on their lives and livelihoods.
People in a village organize themselves in social committees to decide together how they can improve their lives. They receive further training on topics such as sustainable agriculture, hygiene or start-up capital for a savings group.
In Cambodia, 79 percent of the population live in rural areas and rely primarily on agriculture to make a living. The country's geographical location and climate are ideal for agricultural activities, allowing farmers to harvest enough to feed their families.
Despite this, farmers are producing ever poorer harvests. The reasons for this are drought and flooding, which occur much more frequently as a result of climate change, and a lack of technical knowledge.
This project is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, through a program contribution.
The aim is to improve the availability and accessibility of food for 480 farming families in 25 villages. At the same time, resilience to the current effects of climate change is to be increased.
To achieve this goal, the project offers training on improved vegetable and poultry production techniques and model farmers are encouraged to share their experience and knowledge on increasing agricultural yields with their neighbors.
Furthermore, additional small loans are made available to the village development groups to cover the needs of their members who want to expand their business or set up a new one.
The project aims to promote farmers' cooperatives in order to make it easier for farmers to access the market. This should enable them to make reasonable profits from the sale of agricultural products.
