Strumica is a town in North Macedonia. There is not a single retirement home in the surrounding district, which includes over 70 villages with more than 100,000 inhabitants. This means that old people have to be cared for by their relatives. Those who have no one left often live in indescribable conditions, especially when they need care.
More than 200 elderly and, in many cases, disabled people receive a hot meal with soup, main course and dessert five times a week. But "Meals on Wheels" is more than just a meal service.
There is not a single retirement home in the North Macedonian town of Strumica and the surrounding district of over 70 villages with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
Old people have to be cared for by their relatives. If they no longer have anyone, they often live in indescribable conditions. Especially when they become in need of care. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that not everyone has a secure pension, and that official social assistance is too low to live on.
More than 200 elderly and, in many cases, disabled people receive a hot meal with soup, main course and dessert five times a week.
However, "Meals on Wheels" is more than just a meal service. The daily visits also give the sometimes lonely people a chance to talk. If they are ill, a doctor is called or medication is provided. In emergencies, the help also includes clothes, hygiene articles or firewood. In this way, it is possible to alleviate hardship, improve the living conditions of many people and inspire hope. For some time now, the Miss Stone Center has also included a home care project. A physiotherapist and a nurse visit up to 30 people a week.
