For more than a generation, the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has not come to rest. Life for women in this region is extremely difficult. Not only do they have to provide for their families, they are also exposed to a very high risk of becoming victims of violence. Women are often forced to drop out of school or have never had the opportunity to attend school at all.
Through literacy courses run by the Methodist Church, women become literate, can participate in economic and social life and experience a strengthening of their self-esteem.
Women without literacy skills find it very difficult to participate in working life and society in such a way that they can claim their rights and earn a better living. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, just 66% of women in the Democratic Republic of Congo could read and write in 2016.

This project is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, through a program contribution.
Up to 100 women are trained in reading and writing at the Maman Lynn Center. To ensure good supervision, there are a maximum of 30 to 35 women in a class. In the courses, they also learn how to sew, bake and make soap in order to generate an income. 10 particularly vulnerable women receive psychosocial support. A kitchen is also being built for use by the course participants.
