In addition to the large centers such as Kinshasa or Lubumbashi, the Methodist Church in the DR Congo has a very strong presence in rural areas.
The Methodist Church finances the basic structure itself through collections and membership fees. However, the pensions of retired pastors are so small that they are not enough to survive on. In crisis situations, both active and former church employees find themselves in great need.
Connexio hope makes contributions to solidarity funds in the North Katanga and South Congo episcopal regions to support pastors and church employees who find themselves in need due to illness, accident or other reasons. These solidarity funds are administered by the churches themselves.
Here is an example of a pastor from the Episcopal region of North Katanga:
"I was treated at the Shungu Clinic in Kamina for a stroke and high blood pressure. I was admitted to the clinic unconscious and with loss of speech. I was in hospital for a total of 35 days. After successful physiotherapy, I was able to move my limbs again and also regain my speech."
The resilience of pastors and church employees is improved by the availability of the Solidarity Fund. Personal or family emergencies can be overcome faster and better.
