Hiking 42 kilometers for a good cause? No problem.

On September 6, a group of hikers set off from Bargen and arrived safely at the Munot after around 10 hours. Markus Da Rugna reports on this special tour through the canton of Schaffhausen.

It was hiking weather at our hiking marathon. Twelve people between the ages of 17 and 65 set off to tackle 42 km. After the first few kilometers, we reached the northernmost town in Switzerland in the canton of Schaffhausen. Ideal for a group photo, because after that the pace of the runners became increasingly different.

Täuferstein and Rhine Falls

An Anabaptist stone reminds us of the Anabaptists' painful history and secret meeting places. We enjoyed the view into the distance from two edge towers before descending into Klettgau. We were told that the origin of the name 'das am Wasser gelegene' is disputed, the Rhine is too far away, but we wanted to get that far. After a coffee in the pretty little town of Neunkirch, we headed back down a hill to the Rhine Falls in perfect weather, where a wide variety of people suddenly dominated the scene.

All make it

We walked along the Rhine towards Schaffhausen; we had almost made it. Even the cautious ones, who only wanted to hike part of the route at the beginning, made it to the Munot. They were the winners of the hiking marathon, because they went beyond what they knew themselves to be capable of. We rounded off the rich day in a garden restaurant with fine food and a view before everyone sauntered home satisfied.

A big thank you to the hiking group!
The hiking group, led by Markus Da Rugna and Urs Schweizer, raised CHF 1,200 from the marathon, which will be donated to the Early Intervention Center in Tirana, Albania. A team of specialists there supports children with disabilities and their parents. The project is supported by the Evangelical Methodist Church in Albania and co-financed by Connexio develop.
