Floods in Kinshasa: Emergency aid arrives
At the beginning of November, heavy rainfall in Kinshasa turned into a devastating disaster. The Kingabwa district, which lies along the Congo River, was severely flooded. The floodwaters destroyed houses and infrastructure and swept away the livelihoods of over 100 families.
Those affected lost not only their homes, but also all their possessions. The most vulnerable groups were hit particularly hard: single mothers, people with disabilities, and large families, who are now literally left with nothing.
Rapid assistance thanks to locally networked partners
In this district, Connexio develop has been supporting a project run by the Methodist Church for several years to promote literacy and vocational training for women. Thanks to this existing trusting relationship, Connexio was able to respond quickly. Under the leadership of local project coordinator Placide Ndjekambodi, an efficient aid package was put together, reaching 100 particularly affected households. Aid packages containing basic foodstuffs (rice, cornmeal, vegetable oil, beans, and sugar), hygiene items (soap, disinfectant, and special hygiene items for women), and clothing (from clothing donations) were distributed. This was a great relief for people who had nothing left except the clothes on their backs.
What next?
The situation has not yet improved, and the local Methodist church continues to support people wherever possible. Several families who lost their homes have found shelter in the church and are being cared for by the congregation. The critical situation continues, and the rainy season has only just begun. Connexio develop remains in contact with its partner in order to take medium- and long-term preventive measures and set up an early warning system.
