She talked about summer camps, the invitation from the Polish president and the growing fear of war. And she thinks The church needs to become more authentic. \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b608ab e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"6b608ab\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14692f4 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"14692f4\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5f03ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c5f03ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Bo\u017cena Daszuta is widowed, has two children and lives in Kielce, in the south of Poland. She teaches English, is a member of the church council of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc-cse.org\/de\/laender\/polen.html\">Methodist Church in Poland,<\/a> manages the treasury in her congregation and is involved in work with children. In the one-hour Zoom meeting, she gave an exciting and personal insight into the issues facing society and the church. And the 16 participants - one person each came from the USA and Estonia - took away food for thought for their own work.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76a9ae8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"76a9ae8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>Becoming a Methodist - just not <\/strong><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-38dd3ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"38dd3ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Methodist Church in Poland has been recognized by the state since 1925. \u00abEspecially after the Second World War, we were very socially committed,\u00bb says Bo\u017cena Daszuta, \u00aband I hope that we will do more of that again.\u00bb But there was also marginalization: \u00abThere are still people who became Methodist when missionaries came after the war. The neighbors threw stones at them and some of them had a really hard time at school as children.\u00bb Bo\u017cena Daszuta grew up Catholic and decided to join the Methodist Church as a young woman. Her father only thought she was an adult and should make her own choice. But her mother was afraid and said: \u00abYou were born and raised Catholic. What will people say?\u00bb<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da022a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da022a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5>Giving children a good time<\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd8591a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd8591a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Today it's different: \u00abWe don't ask about it, but most of the children who come to the summer camp are Catholic. People are more open and our community is known because of the camp.\u00bb Bo\u017cena Daszuta is delighted: \u00abWe started in 2007 with 16 children, now there are 400; only 20 of them are from our parishes and all the others are from the villages - even the authorities appreciate us. We support families who can't afford the costs. All children should be able to have a good time.\u00bb The church is also involved with therapeutic camps for people with addictions and their families. Photo zVg<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0bfe16e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0bfe16e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>Taking in people from Ukraine <\/strong><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd1001e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd1001e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The congregation in Kielce includes four people who have fled Ukraine; two live in the church. \u00abThey belong to us. They are independent and have a job.\u00bb Will they return? Bo\u017cena Daszuta ponders: \u00abOne is a single mother with her daughter: they will stay. In the other family, the father can't leave Ukraine; his wife travels back and forth. They are waiting for the war to end.\u00bb Ukrainian refugees have been taken in by the church in several places. Some move on, for example to Germany. \u00abWe support them and they are allowed to stay until they have completed their paperwork.\u00bb<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9d8271 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d9d8271\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5>War on the doorstep<\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e2244b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7e2244b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Poland borders Ukraine and Russia. Many people are worried that there could be war in Poland. \u00abWe're not exactly paralyzed with fear, but it's in the back of our minds,\u00bb says Bo\u017cena Daszuta. \u00abThere are people who lived through the Second World War. Others say: \u2018No, no, nothing will happen\u2019. Many build and buy apartments in Spain. But it's like this: The war is on our borders, on our doorstep.\u00bb<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c8ba02c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c8ba02c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5>Church loses importance<\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-363448c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"363448c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In Poland, 90% of the population are Roman Catholic, 1-2% Protestant and around 1% Orthodox. In January, as every year, a representative of the Methodist Church was invited to the Polish President, together with all recognized churches and other religious communities. However, Bo\u017cena Daszuta says that many people are leaving the Catholic Church because of grievances, something that also happens in other churches. \u00abAnd people seem less interested. Other things, such as material prosperity, are more important.\u00bb With the fall of communism around 1990, a hopeful development began: \u00abThere was freedom for people: the freedom to go where they want, to think what they want. But society strives to have more. Many may say to themselves: we don't need God.\u00bb<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a2299e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a2299e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5>\u00abJust\u00bb being there<\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c7b449 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c7b449\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>All churches have to face up to these developments. \u00abIt has also become more difficult for us to keep people. Maybe it's our fault. We should be more authentic, be witnesses worthy of being called that,\u00bb says Bo\u017cena Daszuta thoughtfully. Because people - and especially children and young people - are looking for authenticity. \u00abWe shouldn't just preach on Sunday. We should be with people, stand by them when things go wrong and pass on hope. We just have to be there. People need us because of our social commitment.
